Stealing Metal Locally
Friday, October 12, 2012 at 9:59AM Selling scrap metal can get a few more dollars in your pocket, so maybe that’s why thieves are taking metal from anywhere anytime they can find it. Over the past week, we have reported on cars and catalytic converters from cars being stolen to be sold as scrap. Some areas around the country report that parking lots are becoming a one-stop shop for thieves. In rural areas such as Wilkes County, farms are also targeted by thieves wanting anything with metal. A farmer in Roaring River this week contacted the Wilkes Sheriff’s Office concerning a theft at his chicken houses. The property owner found that someone had removed 3 batteries from the generator room for his chicken houses. The batteries were valued at 390 dollars. Whether to try to re-sale the batteries or sell the metal out of them, thieves apparently took the batteries hoping for some quick cash. There are no suspects at this time; the Sheriff’s Department is investigating .
