Wilkesboro Police were recently called regarding bank card fraud. A Wilkesboro business man had eaten at a local restaurant a dozen times in the past month, but his debit card was charged nearly 100 times. The restaurant manager and the victim checked bank records, time sheets, and determined a former employee was the only one working the cash register when the extra charges to the card were made. The employee had quit just days before the victim noticed there was a problem and confronted the restaurant owner. Wilkesboro Police determined that the card was swiped 12 times, when the victim was actually eating at the restaurant, but the card was keyed in 96 other times when the victim was not at the restaurant. The former female employee was taking cash from the register and keying in the card to cover the different. A total of $6073.69 was stolen by fraudulently using the victim’s card. Wilkesboro Police and the Wilkes Sheriff’s Department have tried to track down the former employee but have been unable to find the suspect. Charges of financial transaction card fraud are pending.
