Not Your Check to Cash

If the check comes to your mailbox, it still isn’t yours if it is made out in another person’s name.  A Boonville woman has contacted the Wilkes Sheriff’s Department and Wilkesboro Police concerning the theft of a Department of Social Services Check.  The woman had recently moved from a home in Traphill to a residence in Boonville.  Her check did not come, so she contacted the DSS office.  They informed the victim that the check was mailed out the first of the month and sent to her old mailbox in Traphill.  It is believed the check was stolen out of the box by the new tenants of the residence in Traphill.  The check in the amount of 272 dollars was cashed at the Fuel Ex in Wilkesboro.  Local law enforcement are attempting to obtain surveillance video from the store where the check was cashed and witness information.  Charges are pending further investigation.
