Congrats! West Wilkes Teams Takes Second Place

The West Wilkes High School Electric Vehicle Team competed in the 16th Annual Northampton County Electric Vehicle Rally on October 19-20, 2012. The competition was held at the North Carolina Center for Automotive Research in Garysburg, NC for the third time. Four teams of high school students compete in various contests. Competitions take place in vehicular autocross, acceleration, range events, electrical troubleshooting, vehicle design, pit crew and electric vehicle jeopardy.  “I was extremely proud of our team’s very close 2nd place overall finish. We finished within 1 point of first place overall, “stated Chris Tolbert, instructor at West Wilkes High School. West Wilkes High School’s pit crew was the only one with girls competing. Tolbert says, “They all did an outstanding job.”  Principal, Wayne Shepherd said, “While conducting research related to finding alternative fuel sources, these students are discovering the relevance of core academic content through real world, hands on, application. This is “learning by doing” at its best!”  And 3WC extends our congratulations to the West Wilkes Team.
