Removing Is A Larceny

Did you know that shoplifting is often just a misdemeanor; however, removing or destroying an anti-theft device is a felony?  A Moravian Falls woman found out the hard way when she was arrested by Wilkesboro Police.  The woman was detained by Loss Prevention Staff at Kohl’s and Police were called to the scene.  The woman was seen taking two pieces of jewelry from the store and leaving without paying.  Without hesitation, the woman admitted to police that she did in fact steal the jewelry valued at 120 dollars.  Both items had anti-theft devices in the packaging that the woman had disabled.  The woman, Sheila Gentle, was arrested and charged with misdemeanor larceny and with felony larceny from a merchant by removing or destroying anti-theft device.  Her bond was set at 2000 dollars, and she was taken to the Women’s Detention Center.
