Volunteer Coach Arrested for Sexual Activity with a Minor

After a lengthy investigation the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office has charged:  Timothy Joe Laws, age 39 of Ranger Rd, Wilkesboro, NC, With:  36 Counts of Felony Sexual Activity with a Student by School Personnel, 12  Counts of Statutory Rape, 15 Counts of Statutory Sexual Offense Against a Person Who is 13,14, or 15 by Defendant who is at least six years older, and 9 Counts of Indecent Liberties with a Minor.  The relationship between Mr. Laws and the victim began while the victim was a student and basketball player at Wilkes Central High School where Laws was a volunteer basketball coach in 2001.  None of the offenses are believed to have taken place on school grounds.  Laws, is 13 years older than the victim, who was 15 at the time of the first incident.  Mr. Laws was arrested without incident on November 1, 2012, and remains in the Wilkes County Jail under a $500,000.00 secured bond.
