It has been a busy week at the Wilkes Sheriff’s Department, especially concerning assault reports and arrests. In the past week, the Sheriff’s Department has made numerous arrests including a few minor charges of traffic violations and damage to property. Concerning more serious crimes--three people were arrested for drug possession, four were arrested for breaking and entering, and two for larceny. The biggest problem this week; however, has been assault reports and arrests. There were at least 18 different arrests for assault by Thursday morning in Wilkes. The severity of the assaults ranged from simple assault to assault with a deadly weapon. Looks like our overcrowding problem in the local jail would be aided by a few local residents taking some anger management classes.
