Truckers and Taxes
Friday, August 31, 2012 at 10:07AM Listen up local truck owners. The Internal Revenue Service reminds truckers that their next federal highway use tax return is due today. The deadline generally applies to Form 2290 with their tax payment for the tax year that begins on July 1 and ends on June 30. The highway use tax applies to highway motor vehicles with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more, which generally includes trucks, truck tractors, and buses. The IRS encourages truckers to take advantage of filing and paying electronically. Due to the Labor Day weekend, the IRS asks truckers to e-file before 1 p.m. Eastern time on today, August 31. The deadline for filing paper returns is unaffected and as usual, must be mailed and postmarked by midnight. For more information on the federal highway use tax, visit www.irs.gov/truckers.
