Another ID Theft Victim In Wilkes

ID Theft is an increasing problem in our country and recently in our county.  Since the first of September, the Wilkes Sheriff’s Office has been called to investigate at least 3 identity theft cases involving an IRS fraudulent tax return, misinformation on a loan, and now online ID theft.  Sheriff’s Officials were called last week when a Wilkes County resident saw that their Capitol One credit card information had been used to purchase an online gift card without their knowledge or permission.  The online purchase was traced back to a Colorado address, but that is the only information at this time.  FYI, the Federal Trade Commission, Internal Revenue Service, and Better Business Bureau all have information on their website regarding protecting yourself from ID theft.
