Visit NC for Black History Month

While the spotlight is trained on Black History Month, the North Carolina Division of Tourism invites you to visit to one of the intriguing North Carolina sites that reflect African American history and heritage.  Today, we spotlight:  Harriet Jacobs Trail in Edenton, NC.  Harriet Jacobs, born in Edenton, escaped slavery and wrote one of the first narratives about the struggle for freedom by female slaves in the plantation South. To commemorate the bicentennial of her birth, her memoir, “Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl,” will be used as the framework for a program on the “Freedom Movement Through the End of the Civil War Era,” set for Feb. 9 at Edenton United Methodist Church Family Life Center. Beyond this one-day event, visitors can follow a self-guided tour of Edenton sites that relate to Jacobs’ life.  Find more sites that explore the African American experience in North Carolina at VisitNC.com.
